Roti John,
essentially an omelette sandwich, is a popular Malay snack in
Singapore and Malaysia. The ingredients include minced mutton,
onion, egg, tomato-chilli sauce and a baguette loaf. French loaf is
sliced into half, with minced mutton, onion, egg, tomato or chilli
sauce and mayonnaise stuffed elegantly in between.
“John” is not the inventor of this dish. The name “John” is
referring to Caucasians and Westerners! The origin of the 'John' in
the name is allegedly due to the Western origin of the Baguette and
the tomato sauce used in the dish. During British colonial rule
Caucasians and Westerners were colloquially and affectionately known
as 'John' in Malay. This provided the nickname for the bread - Roti
John or John Bread.
Different flavours of Roti John are available, such as mutton, beef,
sardine, chicken… |
