Teh Tarik ("pulled
tea" or 拉茶 in Mandarin) is a kind of tea that has a frothy top which similar
to cappuccino. Normally, you can easily find it at restaurants or mamak
stalls in Malaysia or Singapore. The main ingredients are tea and condensed
milk. In Malaysia, there are also occasions where "Teh Tarik" brewers gather
for competitions and performances to show their skills in making this drink.
Teh Tarik is prepared using a unique technique. The tea is poured from a
hand held high into a container held in a hand below. The tea is poured back
and forth in this manner to create a thick froth.
There is a reason behind this unusual method of serving tea. It is believed
that the technique of stretching the tea helps it to mix well with another
essential ingredient, the condense milk. Thus, bring out the strong aroma
and the subtle taste of tea. Also, the beverage cools faster this way.
The same technique can be used to make Kopi Tarik, the coffee equivalent of
Teh Tarik. |
