According to Chinese
legend, one week before the Chinese New Year, the Kitchen God
returns to heaven to report on a family's behavior during the
previous year. A negative report by the Kitchen God means a family
will suffer from bad luck during the year to come. In order to
ensure a favorable report from the Kitchen God, people feeding
Kitchen God with Sticky Cake that is very sweet and sticky as a
bribe or simply a means of ensuring the Kitchen God's mouth was too
full of sticky cake to pass on an unfavorable report. Nian Gao 年糕 (Year Cake/ Chinese new year's cake) – Sticky Rice Cake is a food prepared from glutinous rice. New Year Cake (Nian-Gao). It is a traditional dessert and a must for Chinese New Year. The sound of Nian-Gao in Chinese also resembles a meaning of higher achievement every year. It's a play on words based on the name of the cake which in Chinese is pronounced "Gao" which also means "High高" and "Nian" (sticky) which also means "year年".(年糕 – 年高) |
