Prawn dishes in Cantonese culture known as a food that associated with joyous, laughter and merry. This is because the word ‘prawn’ is call ‘har’ in Cantonese, and it sounds like “ha” as in “hahaha” in laughter – meaning there is happiness and joy. So, in most of the Cantonese families, prawn dishes is a “must” during Chinese New Year.

But nowadays, almost all Chinese like to serve prawn dishes during Chinese New Year. Because prawns are delicious and people like to have all auspicious dishes regardless of it is from which cultures.

Steam Prawns Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 16 prawns with shell (large or medium size, wash and clean)
  • 5 slices ginger (finely shredded)
  • ˝ cup Chinese rice wine (or white wine)
  • 1/3 salt
  • Some coriander
 

Steam:

  • In a deep plate, add in all ingredients except coriander. Mix well.
  • Steam for 6 – 8 minutes or until all the prawns turn red. Do not overcook.
  • Garnish with coriander.
  • Serve when it is still warm.
